Eastern Michigan University is the latest school to begin a campaign of inclusivity revolving around a growing hashtag meant to support all of its students, domestic and international.
The school will change its banners, which are changed every year to represent a different campus group, to represent EMU’s roughly 1,000 international students from over 80 different countries. 108 banners will picture 108 students with the hashtag #YouAreWelcomeHere. EMU created a video to support the campaign, shown below.
The hashtag was created by Study Group, an organization helping international students study in the U.S., in November of last year as an indirect response to Trump’s immigration plans. Starting with Temple University, then six other big name schools, the campaign has now spread to over 250 American institutions. Schools are creating videos, holding speaking events, and encouraging their students to use the hashtag in support of the campaign. Temple’s International Affairs now manages the #YouAreWelcomeHere website and social media accounts.
In a time when our country appears divided, a welcoming message of inclusivity is refreshing. Let’s hope this campaign continues to grow across other American universities.
